Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

Contact me with any questions and set up a consultation lesson. We’ll meet to discuss musical background, goals, and learning style, and get started with the music!

Where are lessons held?

Lessons typically are held at my teaching studio in Pittsburgh, or online using a platform that works for the student. Occasionally, and as my schedule permits, I can arrange for lessons in a student’s home.

Do you teach students of all ages?

For the most part, yes! I typically start students when they are 4 years old, and occasionally will start a student as young as 3. The majority of my students range from 4 to 18 years old, but I also enjoy teaching adult students of any age!

What is your availability and rate for lessons?

I currently am accepting new students, so contact me to discuss mutual availability for lessons. We also can discuss a recommended lesson length, since lesson length determines my rate.

What skills will I learn by studying violin or viola with you?

In addition to a technical foundation on the violin or viola, students will gain skills and experience in music theory, ear training, reading music, sight reading, performance, collaboration, communication, and creative expression. Learning a musical instrument is similar to learning a new language, and students often see benefits in terms of organization, self-discipline, and confidence, as well!

Can anyone really learn to play the viola or violin?

Yes! Anyone who is open and willing to learn, practice, and try new skills and ideas can be successful. I’ve seen students of all ages and varying previous musical experience achieve their goals.

How long do lessons last?

Lessons span 30, 45, or 60 minutes, depending on the age and playing level of each student. Specific lengths are determined as part of the initial consultation lesson.

Can you teach me how to read music?

Absolutely! Your lessons will include learning to read music, if that is one of your goals. Even when studying the Suzuki method, students do learn to read music as part of their curriculum.

Do you offer group classes?

I do! When appropriate, students who are studying privately with me also can participate in group and performance classes, held throughout the year.
